If you’re in France during the French Open, you might overhear French people talk about “tennismen”<\/em><\/strong>… No, this isn’t an auditory hallucination, but what we call a pseudo-anglicism<\/strong>, i.e. a word in one language that appears to be a direct borrowing from English, but does not exist in that language or has an unrelated meaning. Here, the meaning is quite transparent, but English speakers actually use the word “tennis player”<\/strong>, “tennisman”<\/em> being a pure French invention!
