La Casa de Bernarda Alba

Federico García Lorca is probably Spain's most famous modern poet and playwright. La Casa de Bernarda Alba is one of his most well-known plays. Set in a rural house in Andalucia, it tells the story of a family of sisters ruled over by their authoritarian mother, the eponymous Bernarda, in the aftermath of their father's death. Lorca did not know it at the time, but this was to be the last play he ever wrote. In this video, the funeral and wake of the father is over and Bernarda announces that there will be eight years of mourning.
