This week, we’re following the Latin motto Carpe Diem, and we seize the day by mastering the French present tense 😎

Here’s one main difference with the French present tense, and for once it makes your lives easier (I know!): in French, there is no difference between “I’m playing” and “I play”, we use Le Présent “je joue” for both 😊

The idea of enjoying life day to day is not a new concept. French poet Pierre de Ronsard was already writing about the brevity of life in his famous “Sonnets pour Hélène” in 1578:

“Vivez, si m’en croyez, n’attendez à demain :
Cueillez dès aujourd’hui les roses de la vie”

(Live, if you believe me, do not wait for tomorrow:
Pick the roses of life today)

Present tense – A1 Level

Stéphane loves enjoying a sunny day in the meadow close to his house, in the following text, packed with verbs in Le Présent:

“Quand il fait beau, je vais m’allonger sous le grand arbre qui se trouve dans la prairie d’à côté. Là, je ferme les yeux, et je laisse la lumière danser derrière mes paupières. C’est tellement relaxant. Parfois, un papillon vient se poser près de moi, ou un petit écureuil s’approche et je le nourris de petites noisettes… Le monde n’a plus de prise sur moi, et je savoure simplement le moment présent.”
