The best (?) French grammar checkers

A grammar checker is a program, whether on- or off-line, that can correct spelling and some grammar errors in any given text. Since they’re limited in their ability to understand things like context, they can never replace a human corrector, but if all you need is a quick, automated check of text you’ve written, a French grammar checker can correct some obvious mistakes and signal potential errors.

But just how good are online French grammar checkers? To give you an idea of how they perform, I took a famous French text, added 24 mistakes of varying difficulty, and ran this error-riddled French through the top four checkers, then ranked them – from bad to worst.
