Vive la Chandeleur !

This week, we’re celebrating la Chandeleur (Feb 2), French Pancake Day/Candlemas, by stuffing our faces with scrumpious French crêpes and their savoury counterparts, the incomparable galettes 🤤🥞

But what is the difference between une crêpe and une galette ? The main difference lies in the flour and the flavour: la crêpe is traditionally made with wheat flour (farine de froment), milk and eggs, and is commonly eaten as a dessert with sugar, chocolate or jam. Whereas la galette is made with buckwheat flour (farine de sarrasin), water and salt, and is almost always savoury, filled with ham, cheese, eggs or vegetables. But wait, here’s another layer of complexity! While the above distinction applies to most of France, locals from the Basse-Bretagne region (Western Brittany) use the word “crêpe” for both types, simply specifying if it is une crêpe au froment (sweet) or une crêpe au blé noir (savoury)! Now you know ☺️😎

Another great way to remember new vocabulary is to write sentences using it in context. Here’s an example for you to get inspired:

Hier, j’ai fait des crêpes avec mon fils Enzo. Je l’ai aidé à verser le sucre en poudre et la farine dans le bol, puis il a cassé les œufs tout seul. Ensuite, il a versé le lait doucement pendant que je mélangeais la pâte. Un peu plus tard, on a fait sauter les crêpes ensemble : c’est une opération délicate mais c’est tellement satisfaisant quand la crêpe se retourne d’un coup ! Enzo adore manger ses crêpes avec de la confiture de fraise, tandis que je préfère un peu de sucre avec du jus de citron. Miam ! Bonne Chandeleur à tous !
