Hi Jolynn,

There is a charming tradition which consists of giving lily of valley to your loved ones on the 1st May in France.   It is a bank holiday also known as 'la fête du travail' ( it is celebrated on the actual day in France) so I suppose people have time to do something nice to each other. It is true that it flowers in plentiful amounts in May as my own garden would attest.... My father grew pink lily of the valley which was rather special...

"Le brin de muguet que l'on s'offre le 1er mai aurait aussi bien des vertus porte-bonheur .... Associé au retour du printemps, le muguet a toujours été une fleur porte-bonheur. A la période de la Rome antique, les Florales - des fêtes données en l'honneur de la déesse des fleurs Flora - mettaient à l'honneur le muguet, alors partagé en quantité. Quant aux Celtes, ils célébraient sa floraison avant le début de l'été. En France, la tradition du muguet remonte à l'époque Renaissance de Charles IX, qui avait coutume d'en offrir aux dames de sa cour. A Paris, à La Belle Epoque, les couturiers en offraient trois brins aux ouvrières et petites mains"
