la porte s'ouvre

Why s' ouvre? The verb "ouvre" is not a reflexive verb.

Thank you in advance for taking time to answer.

Asked 1 week ago
CécileKwiziq team memberCorrect answer

Hi KN,

The verb 'ouvrir' can be transitive or reflexive .

1. Ouvrir quelque chose =  to open something -transitive verb

Ouvre les rideaux! = Open the curtains!

also

ouvrir la fenêtre, la porte, une boîte de conserve... ( to open the window, the door, a tin...)

2. S'ouvrir = to open - to open out  - reflexive verb

used for fenêtre, porte, livre, vêtement, etc.

e.g.

Le livre s'ouvre à la page 115  = The book opens at page 115

La robe s'ouvre par devant The dress opens/unfastens at the front

La fenêtre s'ouvre sur une cour The window opens on a courtyard

Hope this helps!

Although some verbs only exist in a reflexive version, others can be used either reflexively or not.

Vous ouvrez la porte. -- You open the door.
La porte s'ouvre elle-même. -- The door opens itself (by itself).

Le prof accueille les étudiants. -- The professor welcomes the students.
Nous nous accueillons. -- We welcome each other.

la porte s'ouvre

Why s' ouvre? The verb "ouvre" is not a reflexive verb.

A1 exercise ?????

I think it is very discouraging and disappointing for those who click on the first reading or listening exercise of A1 level, and then they see this passage.

Hi Berkay, not sure what passage you’re referring to but I’m an A1 and just clicked on an A1 Reading exercise , “A Christmas Carol”  to see what you might be talking about and I found it very hard.

Un lit à baldaquins??

Why the word 'baldaquin' is in its plural form?

I looked up in the dictionary, but I could only find the phrase 'un lit à baldaquin', without an 's'.

il regarde "de" chaque côté de la pièce. Why is there a 'de' in front of 'chaque'?

Asked 3 months ago
ChrisC1 Kwiziq Q&A super contributor Correct answer

Regarder de chaque côté means to look at all sides. It's idiomatic. There's another common construction à y regarder de près -- looking at it close up.

ChrisC1 Kwiziq Q&A super contributor Correct answer

You'd say:

 regarder dans chaque coin.

JoanA1Kwiziq Q&A regular contributor

Thank you Chris.

If we want to say: look at every corner, should we say 'regarder de chaque coin' or 'regarder chaque coin'?

il regarde "de" chaque côté de la pièce. Why is there a 'de' in front of 'chaque'?

pourquoi, il parlent vite

Asked 5 months ago
CécileKwiziq team memberCorrect answer

Hi Christine,

When you are learning a new language you often get the impression that people speak very quickly, however a lot of the audio material offered is often much slower than the real speed native speakers speak at.

It is just a question of listening to these passages many times and sooner or later you will start understanding more and more.

Listening skills are the hardest skills to acquire in my opinion but perseverance is key.

Hope this helps!

Où est le reste de l’histoire ? J’ai grand'envie de le lire.

Asked 9 months ago
CécileKwiziq team memberCorrect answer

Hi Reginald,
