In French, you usually use the preposition of place "sur" to express "on". However, sometimes you will use "dans".
Learn how to use 'dans' instead of 'sur' in French
In the following cases, you cannot use sur (on) in French, but you will instead use dans (in).
Street
In the case of the street, we see the whole environment as 'the street' and you're situated in it.
Living on a street, road etc
When referring to the street, road, avenue, or boulevard people live on (using habiter),you can either use dans la/le, simply la/le or nothing at all.
BUT you can NEVER use sur (i.e. on) in that context!
Avec être (to be) or vivre (to live), you can use either dans la/le OR nothing at all.
ATTENTION: Case of avenue
