Articles before the sports

I have a question why do we put an arrival before a sport such as je faire du tennis isn’t du means some or off what does mean if we put it before the sport?

«Je fais du tennis». In English we leave 'some' out (we expect that you do not play ALL tennis, or THE tennis in English and assume that some applies). French requires that 'some' be specified. Hence «faire du sport (tennis)».  In English - I eat bread; in French - Je mange du pain. In the negative «Je ne fais pas de tennis» - in English we can also leave out 'any' but again in French it is required.
