C'est quoi qui

Pourquoi est-ce qu'on ne peux pas dire "C'est quoi qui" au lieu de "Qu'est-ce qui"?

You could well say:

C'est quoi qui fait ce bruit dans la cuisine? Or: Qu'est-ce qui fait ce bruit dans la cuisine?

The first version sounds more familiar.

Bonjour Sebastian,

Chris is correct! Remember: "C'est quoi qui + [conjugated verb]?" is very familiar. Therefore, "Qu'est-ce qui +[conjugated verb]?" is far more elegant and a much better option (both in a conversation or when writing).
