ça vaux la peine

Mornin Francophiles.  I don't quite understand the final sentence 'ça en valait vraiment la peine'.  Why is the 'en' pronoun required?

Thanks.

I find that « en » turns up in lots of unexpected places :) but in this case I think this is because the sentence without the pronoun could be something like « ça valait vraiment la peine de le faire » (it was worth the effort to do it) and « en » replaces the implied « de le faire ».
