Do you use bon or bien with sentir

I smell good(I took a shower)-je sens bon or I smell well( my nose is working properly)-je sens bien. Are either of this correct?

Lucy,

You can say ‘ je sens bon ‘ as you describe, but you cannot use ‘ je sens bien ‘ to say you have a good sense of smell. ( Je me sens bien - I feel well )

The French word for ‘ the sense of smell ‘ is ‘ l’odorat ‘.

In English, “ I have a good sense of smell “ is regularly stated as ‘ I smell well ‘ but you can’t make a similar switch in French using the verb ‘ sentir ‘.

“ I have a good sense of smell “ translates colloquially as ‘ J’ai un bon odorat ‘.

If you want to use ‘ bien ‘, you could say ‘ Mon odorat fonctionne bien ‘.

The links below are useful for coming to grips with describing the senses, rather than their ‘outcomes’ or ‘perceptions’.

The video linked is very simple but useful for understanding the difference between the vocabulary for senses themselves, the verbs that describe their ‘actions’ and the nouns used for the ‘results/perceptions/sensations’
