Bonjour Sue, from the Collins-Robert dictionary: 2 (as opposed to cheques, bonds, shares) espèces fpl in cash, en liquide ⇒ £2000 in cash, deux mille livres en liquide and another masculine noun (= corps) liquid (= argent) cash ⇒ Ils n'acceptent que du liquide. They only take cash. en liquide in cash, in ready money payer qch en liquide to pay cash for sth Bonne chance dans vos études en français. Ron

hi Ron thank you .I asked the question in response to one of the writing challenges, when I used the word to mean cash ( thinking that the translation implied money in the form of coins and notes rather than cheques or credit card), But the answers given did not propose liquide as a translation. so I guess now I need to ask how best to ask a friend do you have any cash to pay for the coffee? and what would be the wording of the question using liquide. Many thanks.
