Marina,

the site is developed by native French speakers, based on metropolitan French.

Both ‘ moquette ‘ and ‘ tapis ‘ are words in use in French.

They are not identical -

‘ Une moquette ‘ is more akin to ‘ a carpet ‘ in English, fixed to the floor and with wall to wall coverage,

and

‘ un tapis ‘ is usually movable, a rug/mat in English.

‘ Tapis ‘ is also used as part of the name of floor covering destined for a specific purpose eg ‘ tapis à escalier ‘ etc ( also an exception as it would be fixed to the stairs for safety obviously ).

The word ‘tapis’ will be heard more commonly, as it is also used in a number of idiomatic expressions and generic descriptions.
