Bonjour Gillian,

Take a look at the link below:

general difference between ensuite and puis

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Bonjour Gillian,

Following on my previous answer: in this type of sentence, where "then" is "sandwiched" between subject and verb (she then dips...), "ensuite" is the only option.

However, puis and ensuite are interchangeable when one is describing consecutive actions. Also, remember that “puis” is often at the beginning of a sentence whilst “ensuite” can be placed in different “spots” in the sentence:

Puis/Ensuite, elle a trempé sa tranche de pain dans son café = Then, she dipped her slice of bread in her coffee.

Ensuite, elle a crié de joie = Then, she shouted with joy

Elle a ensuite crié de joie = She then shouted with joy

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Thank you - but when I used ‘puis’ it was corrected to ‘ensuite’…

Please could you tell me what the difference is between 'puis' and 'ensuite'? Thank you, Gillian
