Pronounciation of "dix"

How come the "dix" was pronounced like "di"? I thought the "x" was pronounced at the end.

Thank you!

If the following word begins with a consonant, it will be pronounced with a silent 'x'. As in di(x) personnes.

If the following word begins with a vowel, it will be pronounced with a z sound. So dix autres is pronounced di-z-autres, dix heures is pronounced di-z-heures.

When used in isolation (like when counting for example), it will be pronounced 'diss'.

The number 6 in french behaves in the same way.

Tricky, french numbers!

No, the trailing -x is silent.
