rentrer meaning in this sentence

I don't understand the difference between these two english responses.  I chose the scones in the quiz and it was market wrong.  Thank you for any clarification.

"Mathilde a rentré la voiture avant qu'il ne pleuve." means:

·       Mathilde put the car back (in the garage) before it rained.

·       Mathilde returned the car before it rained.

Bonjour Alberta,

I guess you meant to say that you chose the second option and it was marked wrong rather than "scones"?

In "Mathilde put the car back (in the garage) before it rained.""put the car back" means to drive the car back while in "Mathilde returned the car before it rained.""returned the car" means to return the car to someone/to a car dealership, in which case, you would use "rendre la voiture".

J'ai rentré la voiture = I put the car back

J'ai rendu la voiture = I returned the car

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Bonjour Alberta,

Cannot comment about "the scones" because I do not have access to that quiz question but

the point in the lesson about transitivity is key. Is the text under discussion using the verb with a direct object (avoir - transitive) or an indirect object (être - intransitive)?

This point could be the area of grammar that you need to study in order to enhance your understanding.

I cannot improve on the actual lesson as it stands.

Bonne continuation

Jim
