Just checking, could "ils ont dû attendre" also be written as "ils aient dû attendre"?

There's nothing about that sentence that would justify using the subjunctive (aient dû). It's a straightforward case of passé composé.

Ils ont dû attendre plusieurs décennies. -- They had to wait several decades.
