to be nice to

In a quiz, and i'm paraphrasing, "Ce soir, Paul sera gentil avec Lise."  Why is Paul not nice "à Lise?"

Merci.

This is another where the answer is “that is just the way it is”. Prepositions are just used differently in English and French.

In French it is < être gentil avec qqn >, in English (usually) “ to be nice to someone”.
