using arrivée instead of arrivé

Question

In the sentences Ils attendent son arrivée  and Ils s'attendent à son arrivée ... why use the feminine arrivée, when Ils (not elles) is the subject and HE is the one arriving.  Merci

Bonjour Laura,
'Arrivée' is a femine noun meaning 'Arrival' in general: 
"L'arrivée du train"; "L'arrivée du courrier": "The train's arrival"; "The arrival of the mail."
'Arrivé/arrivée' is also a noun which can be either masculine or feminine denoting a person who has just  arrived.
