Why no indefinite article?

Why no indefinite article?

" il est devenu citoyen américain." I thought you only omitted the indefinite article when referring to someone's job? Being an American citizen is not a job.

It's not just jobs.

According to L'Huillier (Advanced French Grammar), as well as jobs it's also things like nationalities, ranks and family status (e.g. Catherine est grand-mère); anything, in fact, that has a 'qualifying value'.
