Avoir [nombre] ans = To be [number] years old

Look at these examples expressing age:

J'ai quinze ans.
I am fifteen.

informal:

Tu as quarante ans.
You are forty.

formal:

Vous avez soixante-huit ans.
You are sixty-eight.

Note that to say how old someone is in French, we use avoir +ageans.

Effectively we say I have fifteen years, not I am fifteen.

ATTENTION:
In French, you cannot omit ans as it wouldn't make sense. J'ai quinze simply means I have fifteen (fifteen what?)

To ask someone's age:

informal:

Quel âge as-tu?
How old are you?

formal:

Quel âge avez-vous?
How old are you?

Hi Emma,

that's a question that has no answer. It simply is "J'ai vingt ans." if you want to say your age. In French you have the years, you don't are them. It may be a small consolation to know that it must be equally weird from the French learning English.

Bonjour Emma !

Like Chris said, I think it's a question of point of view :)

In French, we consider you have [gone through] these years, not that you are "old" of that many years.

That's also why you can never just say "J'ai vingt." but always to mention "ans", because you could have many different things :)

I hope that's helpful!

Bonjour Nadya !

Bravo ! Indeed you can say "En septembre/mai/avril... prochain, j'aurai ... ans.". In a more general sense, you can also use "L'année prochaine, j'aurai ... ans." (next year...)

I hope that's helpful!
À bientôt !
