Do you know what a heatwave, a star and a dog have in common? In French, the word for “heatwave” is la canicule, which comes from the Latin “canicula” meaning “a little female dog”. This was also the ancient Roman name for Sirius, the brightest star in the Canis Major (Great Dog) constellation. The Romans observed that Sirius rose at the same time as the sun during the hottest weeks of summer (late July to August), leading them to associate the star’s presence with the scorching weather. Over time, the term shifted from referring to the astronomical “dog days of summer” to describing intense periods of heat or heatwaves! Fascinant, n’est-ce pas ? 🐕🌟🌞
