in the A1 writing challenge for week 12, one sentence is to be translated as: "et il habite en France depuis quinze ans". Isn't this a focus on duration so that it should be "..quinze années" ?

Bonjour Joakim,
I understand your point, however after "depuis" in French, you use "ans" with a specific number of years: "depuis deux ans, depuis six ans", as it is considered as one unit of time, whereas you will use "depuis des années" which there insists on the duration.
