How do you know which to use, between auquel and à laquelle? Is the first masculine and the second feminine?

Le livre auquel je fais référance se trouve dans la bibliothèque. -- The book I'm referring to is in the library. Le livre is masculine, therefore you need auquel.

Hi for the example:Le livre auquel je fais référance se trouve dans la bibliothèque. -- The book I'm referring to is in the library. I don't get why you wouldn't translate the auquel in the sentence, is it because we just wouldn't use it in English? Thank you
