Hi Nick,
The difference is between :
I wasn't able to give it back to him = Je n'ai pas encore pu le lui rendre
and 
I didn't manage to give it back to him = Je ne suis pas encore arrivé à le lui rendre 
In my opinion, there is a slight difference although the outcome is the same.
If you don't agree I could ask the team to see if they want to add it to the possibility.
