Hi SC and Marika,

Thank you for pointing this out, the word 'une compétition' was missing from the hint. It has now been added.

The relative pronoun will be -

auquel for un concours 

and

à laquelle for une compétition.

David, the passé simple is the preferred tense for these kinds of historical or literary passages.
