Definite article with names of continents/countries/counties/regions/states - New Hamsphire
This question relates to:French lesson "Continents/countries/counties/regions/states are masculine, feminine or plural in French (Gender)"
Asked 3 weeks ago
Bonjour Pieter,
I agree with you that getting to understand when a region/country is feminine or masculine can be tricky in French. Here, "New Hampshire" is unchanged from English and doesn't carry a French feminine ending, so by convention it will be masculine → le New Hampshire. This is what this part in the lesson is explaining:
English counties, including the ones ending in "-shire" and Merseyside, are masculine...
I hope this is helpful.
Bonne journée !
