To supplement on Chris's answer:
J'étudie depuis deux mois
-> still happening - hence 'depuis' - so far it has been 2 months
J'ai étudié pendant deux mois
-> past completed action - hence 'pendant' - a complete duration of 2 months

Depuis focuses on the beginning of an action.
Pendant stresses its duration without reference to its beginning or end.
