The best way to say it would be: Il est derrière la maison. Derrière is a preposition and that's what's needed here. Arrière alone isn't a preposition, so you cannot say ...arrière la maison. The third option you cite, en arrière de la maison, isn't used in standard French, where en arrière usually stands alone, without a noun. You could say, va en arrière -- go backward, but it isn't used in the way you quote in your question.
