French verbs that require an indirect object pronoun

Question

The French verb appeler, to call: if you wanted to say: "I am calling her", would you use a direct or an indirect object pronoun, please? .. Je l'appelle ?  (l' = la: direct object pronoun)...or... Je lui appelle ? (lui = to her, indirect object pronoun). For example, you must use only an indirect object pronoun when using these verbs: écrire; envoyer; rendre, and many others, etc. What about this verb appeler, please? Calling her, or calling to her?

Appeler does not require a preposition between the verb and the object it is acting on. Thus it uses a direct object pronoun.

Appeler [quelqu'un] - to call [someone]
Je l'appelle - I call him (or her)
