In French, the nouns "alentours/environs" are always in the plural form.
J'habite dans les alentours/environs = I live around here
Il n'y a pas de pharmacie aux environs/alentours = There are no pharmacy around here
J'ai entendu un bruit étrange aux alentours /environs de minuit = I heard a strange noise around midnight
