Il faut froid

Question

Please help!I say il faisait froid ce matin and my French neighbours nearly always respond with " oui il faisait frais".Am I wrong to use froid - should I say frais ?

Hi Dale, 
Just to add to the other responses, you might have heard people offering you 'une boisson fraîche' which means it will come out of a fridge, so it is a matter of degree of cold as has been said before.

It is a matter of degree, much as in English, between "it is (really) cold" and "it's (a bit) fresh".  Of course, they may be politely hinting 'if you think this is cold, wait until winter arrives' !
