Is there a difference between "c'est" and "c'était" ? It seems like people use them interchangeably.

C'est - it is. ( présent)

C'était - it was (imparfait).

It is magnificent - c'est magnifique.

It was magnificent - c'était magnifique.

As 'verb of state', être is most frequently conjugated in imparfait for past tense.
