Je venais rather than appeler?

Je venais rather than appeler?

Why is it 'je venais'  when she is saying 'I was calling' rather than using appeler e.g. J'appelais simplement...'?

The translation of the sentence in English is not literal, but it is exactly what you would say in English in this kind of situation.
