What does "Elise aime beaucoup Fred." mean ?

- The correct answer was she likes Fred very much. Why can't it be, "She loves Fred very much"?

"Aimer" is a peculiar verb in that its intensity is lessened when it is qualified by an adverb.

Je t'aime - I love you -but- Je t'aime bien - I like you
