Monter - être, or avoir

Monter - être, or avoir

This is probably a very fine distinction. "I got on my horse", according to the lesson would be "J'ai monté mon cheval." So why is it incorrect to say, ''Lucas a monté la nouvelle armoire de sa sœur.'' - "Lucas got on his sister's new wardrobe"?"

Hi Gregory,

Unfortunately, it doesn't work with the wardrobe you have to say -

Lucas est monté sur la nouvelle armoire de sa sœur= Lucas got onto his sister's new wardrobe

monter then uses 'être'

Lucas a monté la nouvelle armoire de sa sœur = Lucas built his sister's new wardrobe

monter uses 'avoir'

Hope this helps!
