So, when is it appropriate to use "aime" and "aime bien ?"

Aimer with a person is always about romantic love.

Aimer bien with a person is just "like" and will not be understood as a romantic relationship.

Bien is added for emphasis. Aimer bien is like saying "I really like" versus just "I like."
