Shampoo and shampoo bottle

Checking a couple of points

Both 'shampoing' and 'shampooing' are formally accepted and used spellings, but the latter is being 'corrected' to the former here.

A 'bottle' of shampoo is mostly advertised and sold as 'un flacon' - ' j'ai fini le flacon ' is not accepted as correct though.

Bonjour Maarten,

Thank you for pointing this out! You're absolutely right: both "shampooing" and "flacon" are correct options here.

Thanks to you, they have now been added to the list.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Thanks for this. This was my first time seeing the "shampoing" spelling...is it quebecois?

SC,

it is québécois too,  as it has been adopted for Canadian French as well, but it is originally from the ‘reformed’ French spelling proposed by the Académie Française in 1990 reforms. Both the traditional and reformed spellings are considered correct by the Académie, and many French people and places have yet to transition fully, or at all !

I can’t find a confirmatory link presently, but I think the French government has decreed that the reformed spelling be used in official French government material even though the official position of the Académie (based on its dictionary entries) is that the reformed spellings are preferred but have not replaced the traditional spelling.

The attached links are good summaries of the situation, and a web search will provide many links on the ‘polémique’ :
