Is there a reason why I cannot use “ étonnée “ for surprised? The answer given uses “surprise”. Thanks

It is just a case of intensity.
I always think of 'astonished' for 'étonné/e' in English.
Although they are similar in meaning and quite interchangeable in casual conversation, in practice, 'surpris/e' is more common. 'Étonnée' adds a touch more emphasis or suggests the surprise has made more of an impression on you.
