Il y a du soleil. -- It's sunny. / The sun is shining.
Il fait beau. -- The weather is nice.
Hi Stephen,
Although both expressions are used to say the weather is lovely, this particular lesson is about using 'il y a' to speak about the weather so
'il fait beau'
wouldn't work here.
