"y" pronoun in this subjunctive question

Please can you explain the use of 'y' pronoun in this test question answer:n'y ait ( I wanted it to be simply  'il n'ait')


Nous avons ouvert les fenêtres de peur qu'il ________ une fuite de gaz. We opened the windows out of fear there might be a gas leak.

It is the fixed impersonal expression “il y a” in subjunctive, rather than the present. (Without ‘y’, “there is no there there”, as the English saying goes !)

Il y a = There is, There are
