Take the fastest path to fluent French
To express being scared in French, we can use the expression "avoir peur de" (Literally: to have fear of [something]).
How to use 'avoir peur de' in French
Look at these examples:
Note that the French expression uses avoir (literally "to have fear of"), whereas in English we would use to be afraid.
- Avoir peur de [quelque chose/quelqu'un] = To be scared of [something/someone]
Note that de + le, la, l', les (= of the) follows the contraction rule of de: du, de la, de l', des.
- Avoir peur de [faire quelque chose] = To be scared of [doing something]
Note that avoir peur de is followed by the infinitive of the verb, unlike -ing in English.
- Avoir peur de [moi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, elles] = To be scared of [me, you, him, her, us, you, them]
Note that in this case, avoir peur de is followed by a stress pronoun.
