As this is a story, use Le Passé Simple when appropriate.

Pay attention to the hints!

Catherine didn't feel at ease inside the dark manor which she and Thomas had just moved into. On that first night, despite everything her husband had said to reassure her, she couldn't fall asleep. After tossing and turning in vain, she decided to go clear her mind in the library. She grabbed the first book that she saw, and she sat down comfortably in an armchair. The first page depicted the figure of a woman reading a book in a library strangely similar to the one where Catherine was. The second page seemed identical to the previous one but for the library's door which was now ajar. Shivering, Catherine turned the third page, and she barely had time to notice the man with a knife who was crouching behind the woman's familiar armchair, before hearing a rustling noise behind her...
