Après avoir fait OR Aprés que

Après avoir fait OR Aprés que

If I want to say ‘after I did something’ when do I use the construction ‘après avoir + past participle’ and when do I use ‘après que + indicative tense’

Or, could I use either?

The question in the test was:  ‘you went to the cinema after studying for your exam’

I used ‘après que tu as révisé pour ton examen’ and it was marked wrong. The correct answer being ‘après avoir révisé pour ton examen’

Hi John,

As the quiz is attached to the lesson, I assume the idea was to get the learner used to using -

 'après avoir +participe passé'.

But no, your suggestion is not incorrect.

The quiz wasn’t attached to a lesson. It was just a quiz. But so long as I can use either expression, that is fine. Thanks.

Bonjour.

I would like to add that you are discussing two separate tenses. 1) After I did something, and 2) After doing something. For #1), the french translation would be Après que tu as quelque chose while the translation for #2) is Après avoir fait quelque chose. In summary, you had the wrong tense in your translation. (Even though both are similar in meaning.)
