All three sample sentences for this usage seem freighted with disappointed expectations! Is this the way it’s normally used or just a coincidence?

What about -

Pour mon anniversaire, nous attendons une bonne surprise de ma famille = For my birthday we are expecting a nice surprise from my family.
En tant que client fidèle, j'attends un service de qualité = As a loyal customer, I expect quality service.

attendre qqc. de qqnn -- to expect something from someoneThis is quite neutral and doesn't carry a negative meaning per se, quite similar in usage to its English counterpart, actually.
