Hi Walter, 

Interesting point you raise, I might be able to explain it by changing the noun to 'girl'.

The girl nexdoor is very bright= La fille d'à côté est très intelligente

The girl next to you is my sister = La fille à côté de vous est ma sœur 

Two separate concepts....
