Belle vs. jolie

What is the difference between belle and jolie? I had assumed that they both meant beautiful, but I guess I am wrong?

They have a different connotation:

Jolie: nice, pretty
Beau/belle: beautiful, handsome

If you want to make a compliment to the woman of your heart, the stronger one would be to say, tu es belle.
