bonne chance v. bonne fortune

Hi laura,

The two expressions we accept for 'to bring good luck to everyone' are -

But if you wish someone 'Good luck!' you would only use 'Bonne chance !'

Hope this answers your question.

Bonjour Laura,

From the lesson text, I would expect to use "bonne fortune" because the sense is to wish good luck/fortune for the coming year.

To wish "bonne chance" has the meaning of good wishes when the sense is of someone about to undergo some potential element of difficulty /risk /hazard.

I used this term recently when a French friend was about to go to Madrid to study dentistry and the dentistry course was to be conducted in English.

Bonne journée

Jim
