Conditionnel tense question

What is the difference between J'était dormir and Je dormait? Are they both correct to indicate "I was sleeping"?

Salut Michele,

The second is almost correct to mean 'I was sleeping', but should be spelt 'je dormais'. This is the imperfect tense. If you wanted to use the conditional ('I would sleep') the translation is 'je dormirais'. The first example you give isn't correct for either the imperfect or the conditional (or anything else I'm afraid)
